White noise/random noise can be the easiest to work with. There's a couple of albums around (I have heard snippets but can't find them) that are recordings of a number of Pachinko parlours in Japan, which are horrendously noisy environments, with ball bearings clacking, sirens, bells, whistles etc. But amongst the racket it's possible to hear a soothing pattern.
